1. SPD Required at Services

The 2020/2023 NEC requires surge protection (Type 1 or Type 2) on new and replaced dwelling service equipment — a recognition of how vulnerable modern electronics are.

2. Listed Type 1 or Type 2 Devices

The SPD must be a listed device installed integral to or adjacent to the service equipment — not a plug-in strip.

The SPD shall be an integral part of the service equipment or located immediately adjacent.

3. Short Conductor Leads

Installation practice matters: every inch of lead length raises the let-through voltage that reaches your electronics.

4. Grounding Electrode System

How much does whole-house surge protection cost in Raleigh?

No device guarantees protection from a direct strike. SPDs are designed for the far more common events: nearby strikes traveling down utility lines and utility switching transients — which cause most surge damage.

How long does the installation take?

About an hour for a standard panel with healthy grounding. We verify the grounding system first because the SPD depends on it.

How do I know it’s still working?

Status indicator lights on the device confirm protection health. We show you what to check after major storms; if an indicator changes, the module is replaceable.

Is surge protection required by code?

For new and replaced service equipment, yes — NEC 230.67 now requires SPDs on dwelling services. Adding one to an existing panel brings you to the current standard.
