Electrical Standards

Electrical Panel Upgrade NEC Code Requirements

Every electrical panel upgrade must comply with the National Electrical Code governing working clearances, overcurrent protection, grounding, and conductor sizing.

1. Panel Working Space

Electrical panels require minimum working clearances in front, above, and to the sides. The NEC mandates at least 36 inches of clear space in front of the panel, 30 inches wide, and headroom of at least 6.5 feet. Failure to maintain working space creates safety hazards during maintenance and emergencies.

NEC Ref: 110.26

Working space about electrical equipment must meet minimum depth, width, and height requirements.

2. Overcurrent Protection

Each circuit in the panel must have a breaker sized to protect the wire connected to it. A 200-amp main breaker protects the service entrance conductors. Branch circuit breakers must match the wire gauge — 15A for 14 AWG, 20A for 12 AWG, and so on. Mismatched breakers and wire sizes create fire risk.

NEC Ref: 240.4

Conductors shall be protected against overcurrent in accordance with their ampacities.

3. Grounding Electrode System

The grounding electrode system provides a path for fault current to safely dissipate to earth. Panel upgrades require two ground rods driven at least 8 feet into the ground, spaced at least 6 feet apart, connected with properly sized copper conductors. Bonding to water pipes and gas systems is also required.

NEC Ref: 250.50

Grounding electrode system shall be connected to all electrodes present at the building.

4. Service Entrance Conductors

Service entrance conductors must be sized to handle the full amperage of the new panel without exceeding their rated capacity. For a 200-amp residential service, the NEC requires conductors rated for at least 200 amps. Undersized conductors overheat and create fire hazards at the point of entry.

NEC Ref: 230.42

Service entrance conductors shall have an ampacity not less than the rating of the service disconnect.

Common Asked Questions

Common questions from Raleigh homeowners about electrical panel upgrade service.

Still have questions?

Our Raleigh electrical experts are here to help you every step of the way.

R1 R2 R3
Real People. Real Answers.
We're here when you need us.
How much does an electrical panel upgrade cost in Raleigh, NC?

Most Raleigh homeowners invest between $2,000 and $4,500 for a standard 200A panel upgrade, depending on panel size, wiring, and utility requirements. We provide upfront, transparent pricing with no hidden fees — and free, no-obligation estimates.

Do I need a permit for a panel upgrade in Raleigh, NC?

Yes. Every panel upgrade in NC requires an electrical permit and inspection — no exceptions. We file the permit with City of Raleigh or Wake County Inspections and schedule the inspection as part of every job.

How long does a panel upgrade take to complete?

Most upgrades take 4–8 hours on-site, with power off for 3–5 of those hours. The full process — permit to final inspection — spans about a week.

What size electrical panel do I need for my home?

Most modern homes need 200-amp service. The right size depends on your square footage, appliances, and plans for EV chargers or additions — we confirm it with an NEC load calculation during the estimate.

Can I upgrade my panel from 100 amps to 200 amps?

Yes — it’s the most common upgrade we perform. It typically includes a new panel, breakers, grounding upgrades, and often a new meter base, all permitted and inspected.

Will Duke Energy need to disconnect power during the upgrade?

Yes. Duke Energy disconnects at the meter the morning of the install and reconnects the same day after the new panel is tested. We coordinate the disconnect and reconnect for you.
