Project Overview
After a nearby lightning strike took out a neighbor’s electronics, this downtown Raleigh homeowner wanted real protection for a home full of new appliances, computers, and A/V equipment — more than plug-in power strips could ever provide.
We installed a listed Type 2 surge protective device directly at the main panel on a dedicated breaker with minimal lead length, verified and tightened the grounding electrode system it depends on, and registered the manufacturer’s connected-equipment warranty—clamping surges at the service entrance before they reach a single outlet.
Problem
No whole-home surge protection — only power strips guarding a home full of electronics.
Solution
Type 2 SPD at the panel on a dedicated breaker, with verified grounding and short leads.
Result
Every circuit protected against utility spikes and storm transients, 24/7.
Project Story
What We Installed and Verified
We added panel-level surge defense and verified the grounding it depends on, protecting every circuit in the home from voltage spikes.
Work Included
All work completed to meet NEC and local code requirements
Equipment Upgraded
Type 2 SPDListed surge protective device rated for repeat storm events.
Dedicated BreakerTwo-pole breaker feeding the SPD at the top of the panel.
Grounding SystemVerified electrodes and bonding — the path every surge discharges to.
Status IndicatorsProtection-health lights the homeowner can check after storms.
Our Work Process
A safe, code-compliant installation requires more than just equipment. Here’s how we executed this surge protection install from start to finish.
Panel & Grounding Assessment
We confirmed breaker space, service size, and panel condition, then inspected the grounding electrode system the SPD depends on — electrodes, bonding, and connections — before any work began.
SPD Installation
The Type 2 device was mounted adjacent to the panel and connected through a dedicated two-pole breaker with the shortest possible lead length — the single biggest factor in real clamping performance.
Testing & Walkthrough
We verified the status indicators, explained what each light means, showed the homeowner what to check after major storms, and registered the manufacturer’s connected-equipment warranty.
